“We have been called by Pope Francis to celebrate this Jubilee Year, first of all, contemplating the face of Christ, in whom the mystery of God’s mercy has reached its summit. But we also need to bring the experience of God’s mercy to the whole world.” – Bishop Michael C. Barber, S.J. Our mission at JubileeOfMercy-EB.org is to provide spiritual, theological, and pastoral resources which attempt to express the tenderness and Mercy of the Father. Because some people find difficulty in encountering God’s Mercy, we encourage others to perform the 14 Works of Mercy by promoting volunteer opportunities in the East Bay and publicizing diocesan events that will occur during the Jubilee of Mercy. By doing so, we hope to strengthen the faith of believers in the Diocese of Oakland by reminding them of God’s Mercy and encouraging them to share this experience with others who may not know God’s Mercy as intimately, through their own Works of Mercy.
The Diocese of Oakland currently serves the needs of the faithful in the San-Francisco-Bay Area’s East Bay. Currently, there are 332 priests, 119 deacons and 411 religious brothers and sisters in 84 parishes, 16 pastoral centers and other diocesan offices. Including religious education programs, there are nearly 50,000 students under Catholic instruction in the Diocese at 45 elementary schools, nine high schools, two Catholic colleges and several schools of religious formation.
The Catholic Church throughout the diocese offers a range of service ministries assisting the elderly, the young, the poor, and the oppressed. As such the Church is the largest provider of social services in the East Bay, delivering shelter, meals, counseling, education and other critical services free of charge to over 400,000 people of all faiths each year.
