"Handmade valentines from pupils at St. Elizabeth Elementary School in Oakland; School of the Madeleine in Berkeley; Hillside Elementary in San Leandro; and Albany Middle School provided a little something extra for seniors who were picking up their bags of groceries Feb. 12 at the Oak Center Towers in Oakland. Nicole St. Lawrence, Mercy Brown Bag's volunteer coordinator/administrative assistant, takes valentines off the bulletin board to add to the bags as volunteers look on. The Mercy Brown Bag, which began in 1982 at the Mercy Care & Retirement Center in Oakland, now distributes nutritious groceries to more than 3,000 low-income seniors twice monthly, free of charge, at 18 sites in the East Bay."
