During his trip to Africa, Pope Francis opened the Holy Door at  the Cathedral of Bangui. Even though the Jubilee of mercy has yet to begin, Pope Francis opened the door "as a sign of prayer and solidarity with the country" (Catholic News Agency). According to Catholic News Service, "Pope Francis prayed for the mercy and grace of peace as he used both hands and his body weight to push open the Holy Door of the cathedral."

The Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica will be opened on December 8, and the Holy Door at the Cathedral of Christ the Light will be opened by Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ on December 13 after the 10:00 am Mass.
